History and information[edit]

Prairie Meadows in March 2007

In 1984, Prairie Meadows received a license from the Iowa Racing and Gaming commission to operate a horse racing facility after parimutuel betting was legalized by the state the previous year. In 1987, groundbreaking ceremonies were held for Prairie Meadows.

Prairie

Prairie Meadows conducted its first day of racing on March 1, 1989. However, the track lost money during its first few years of operation and filed for bankruptcy in November 1991. Live racing was suspended for the 1992 season before revenues from off-track betting allowed racing to resume the following year.[1]

On May 17, 1994, Polk County voters approved a referendum allowing the installation of slot machines at Prairie Meadows. On April 1, 1995, the slot machine casino opened at Prairie Meadows, and by the end of 1996, Prairie Meadows was able to pay off the bonds that were issued by the Polk County Board of Supervisors.[2]

On December 14, 2004, Prairie Meadows added casino game tables after receiving state approval to do so. As a result of the high demand for these tables, the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission approved Prairie Meadows' plans to expand its facility on January 25, 2005.[3] Construction on the $60 million expansion began in September 2005. An addition to the casino opened in August 2006, while two new restaurants and a 1,200-seat concert hall known as 'The Meadows' opened in February 2007.[4]

Prairie Meadows is owned by Polk County and operated by a local, non-profit, 13-member board of directors. The revenues generated by Prairie Meadows are given to various community projects in the Des Moines area, including construction of the Iowa Events Center complex in downtown Des Moines. Prairie Meadows' gross revenue for the 12-month period ending June 30, 2008, was nearly $193 million. That total ranked second to the Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs among Iowa's casinos.[5]

On January 16, 2019, Prairie Meadows announced a partnership with bookmaker William Hill in preparation for the proposed legalization of sports betting in Iowa.[6][7]

Physical attributes[edit]

Prairie Meadows has a one-mile dirt track with a chute for quarter horses. On site is a casino with 1,900 slot machines[8] and casino game tables featuring games such as poker, roulette, and blackjack. The track area has also hosted free concerts by national musical acts in recent years.

Racing[edit]

Horses are about to cross the finish line during a September 5, 2005, race at Prairie Meadows

Prairie Meadows runs many stakes and handicaps during its April to October season.

Graded events[edit]

The following Graded events were held at Prairie Meadows in 2019.

In addition, other animals such as ostriches have raced at the facility.[9]

Comizend Family2020-10-26I toured with Don, Marketer. He was very helpful to answer my questions. I appreciate his time and recommend him and this facility to anyone looking for care of their loved one. They do a lot of outings and it's clean here. The staff was all very nice. Thank you. ML2019-03-13My husband was a past resident of Prairie Meadows. I was not pleased with their care. He had two pairs of shoes with him and he ended up with one shoe. They lost his wristwatch and glasses on several occasions, but he was a very difficult patient and they didn't seem to cope too well. The care he received from the people was very nice, but there wasn't enough of them to handle a situation like his. They said they have sensors in the ceiling that they would detect any motion from him at night. He fell out of bed many times and they would call me the next day and say, 'Your husband fell out of bed last night and we don't know how long he was lying there.' It was a lovely establishment. The staff was good but inadequate. The rooms were large and very nice. Overall, the facilities were very nice.I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident
kateK.2018-06-09The cna staff is very nice , the girls do wonderful with the residents... management on the other hand is horrible! Over the past 6 months this place has went completely down hill. I never seen the new administrator since Mallory left. I've seen the director of nursing in passing never knew who she was until another staff told me. Administration never comes out the office. They don't interact with families or residents from what i have seen. They are always short staff it's only ever 2 or 3 aids when i come visit. My mom doesn't get her scheduled showers, personal hygiene barely gets done, they change people maybe once or twice a day. The cna's seem overwhelmed half the time when I'm visiting because management puts the entire responsibility for the building on them. Old adminstation at least came out the office and helped on the floor when they were short or at least came out an visited with families during meals. The level of care that people with dementia is higher an more demanding that a normal assisted living. It's more of a over priced, low staffed long term skilled nursing facility! Don't bring your high functioning family members they will lose all ability to be independent within months. I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident
William Rhodez2018-01-28Residents are snowballed with seriquel to calm them down. Management is very proud of this and boast about their special ' hand cream for difficult residents. Be very wary of this facility. I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident
sb6082012017-05-30I made the tour of Prairie Meadows Alzheimer's Special Care Center. Once I realized that it was private pay only and no Medicaid eligible down the way, I cut the tour short. The rooms were fine, but it was an expensive place. I wasn’t overly impressed.I visited this facility
Kath6251652017-01-11I was very impressed with Prairie Meadows, but they don’t do respite care. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The rooms and apartments were very clean. The residents seemed clean and active.I visited this facility
NolanGBSCI2016-05-10Our mother resides at this unit. The nurses, administrative staff listen and follow through our concerns. We feel the staff cares immensely about mother's care. We are at peace she is being taken care of at Prairie Meadows.I am a friend or relative of a resident
Kathleen K. M.PSYXN2016-05-10My husband is receiving such excellent care here! All the staff show that they love him and more importantly that they know him and all his quirks! The building layout is perfection for someone who enjoys wandering.I am a friend or relative of a resident
EAP12015-12-16We did have my husband for about three weeks in Prairie Meadows. I did not feel that they were equipped to handle him. He got a little bit aggressive, and they were not able to handle him. The staff was very good though. His room was very spacious and very clean. They provided a bed, but we needed a hospital bed, so we provided our own and everything else. We were happy there, but they were not able to handle his behavior. We weren't very happy with the food too. There was not much variety, and they were never given a choice. I did eat there a couple of times, and it wasn't great. They also didn't have a very organized activity situation.I am a friend or relative of a resident
SE12015-11-22Prairie Meadows is an excellent Alzheimer’s care facility. We met their staff who give excellent care and are very helpful. They have private rooms which are very nice. Their food is excellent. They have all kinds of group activities, go on outings, do crafts, and host movie nights. They have a couple of patios for residents to go out on. There is one nurse for every four clients. The public bathrooms in the hallways can get dirty, so they need to clean those more than once a day.I am a friend or relative of a resident
Anonymous1074324502015-11-11I pulled my mother out of Prairie Meadows because they oversold what their property has to offer. They said that they would be able to take care of her personal needs, and they could not. They weren’t properly staffed.I am a friend or relative of a resident
Kyle52015-06-15We visited Prairie Meadows, and it is too much at this time for my mother. It was a nice facility, but it just wasn't as close, and it was much more restrictive. They were able to answer all my questions, and it seemed that they do a good job. They were good, but they just weren't quite what we needed.I visited this facility
